It’s the middle of the night and a weekend. You're awakened by a fuse alarm on a power panel in an unmanned hub in a less than desirable part of town. What do you do?
This week, we introduce a new blog series, Powered by Telect. Ruth Bingaman, Product Manager for Power, explores the world of DC and secondary power management and distribution.
The usual answer to your conundrum is:
Roll a truck to figure out the issue and fix it.
But at what cost? Too much money. Way too much.
Estimates run anywhere from $150 to $1,000 per hour depending on such factors as labor rates, vehicle costs, time of day, distance, etc.
What if you could avoid that late-night truck roll and schedule service and maintenance for a normal maintenance window? Would you? Of course!
Companies are under constant pressure to reduce operating costs and maintain fiber-optic network reliability. You can do that with improved visibility into your network equipment, specifically its power use.
Monitoring power use at the circuit level gives incredibly valuable insight into the health of your gear. You can watch your power consumption trends by setting thresholds to get automatic notifications. Then, you know there’s a problem before it becomes an outage.
Most power panels on the market that allow remote monitoring are only monitoring at the feed level. This doesn’t provide the actionable insight required to make the right cost-saving decisions.
Having power use trend up or down at the feed level doesn’t tell you what specific piece of equipment is causing it (or maybe there’s more than one) unless you send someone in to clamp a shunt on and manually get circuit-level readings.
So, you’ve just spent a lot of time to get that data and what do you have to compare it against?
The Telect nrgSMART portfolio of DC power distribution panels provide circuit-level monitoring giving you more insight into your network health than ever before.
And maybe, just maybe, get a good night’s sleep while saving the company money.
Ruth Bingaman is the Product Manager of Power at Telect. She's passionate about solving customer challenges with power distribution. Her top product is the nrgSMART family of DC power distribution with circuit-level fuse monitoring.
