We asked Alan a few questions about what it's like to work at Amphenol Network Solutions and learned how much his career has developed since joining our team over five years ago!
What three words would you use to describe our culture?
Resilient, Dedicated, Friendly, and Supportive (3 words plus 1!)
What have you gained from working at Amphenol Network Solutions?
I’ve been part of Telect / Amphenol for 5 1/2 years and have learned more here than I have in my 25 years before working at local technology companies. At Amphenol, I am given latitude to make decisions as well as the trust to responsibly contribute to and participate in ways that help grow the company and its people. This trust enabled me to see my work as more than what was in front of me and to see how the organization works altogether. This has allowed me to grow as an employee and as a person.
What do you like most about your role? What is the most challenging part of your role?
Every day brings a new challenge in my current role. As Manufacturing Operations Manager, I get satisfaction from understanding the importance of each person’s role and helping each employee grow and see where they fit within the company. I think this helps each person also see the bigger picture putting them in the position to see new opportunities for growth or efficiency. I get satisfaction from addressing day-to-day challenges of just keeping the “wheels on the wagon”. But I also like looking to the future and imagining what we could do better and setting us moving in that direction.
How has your career developed since joining the company?
I started as a Manufacturing Engineer progressing to a Senior Manufacturing Engineer and these roles gave me practical experience of working with our designs, our suppliers, and our customers. I focused on building professional relationships and driving improvements in design and process. How things work has always been a passion, so I believe I excelled in the role. I moved into an NPI role and had more involvement in working with engineering to design for fabrication and manufacturing. And today, I have the opportunity to bring some of that together in a leadership role and mentoring others.
What advice do you have for prospective candidates?
Work hard with integrity, learn from others and your own experiences, accept change, and grow… Your efforts will bring satisfaction and reward!
What has been your favorite project at Amphenol Network Solutions?
I really enjoyed working on some of our custom product packaging solutions. Packaging project where I could innovate how to pack and ship heavy spools to the customer without damage and present the product in a way that facilitated installation at the customer with minimal tools and manpower. I was able to get the satisfaction that the solution worked and that it exceeded customer expectations.
If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?
At Amphenol, I would like to be an Amphenol customer for one day so that I had a direct perspective on what we do well and on what we could do better. If not at Amphenol, I’d like to be a greenskeeper at a local golf course – just to enjoy the morning quiet and sunshine driving equipment drinking my coffee…
What is on your bucket list?
I have always wanted my own place on a lake and am planning to break ground on that dream next year. Also, I’d like to ride my motorcycle to Sturgess and see what it’s like to be “born to be wild”!
