Traditionally, FTTH deployments involved the deployment of an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) in a Central Office or a neighborhood cabinet. The OLT then fed individual homes and/or businesses through an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) through dedicated (point to point) or shared (PON) fiber networks. These ONTs have been placed on the exterior of homes, usually to allow craft access when needed without disturbing homeowners. This approach required “hardened” electronics which must also be secured.

Advances in ONT technology have led to the possibility of a change in the deployment paradigm. With higher reliability, craft access is less of a concern than during the infancy of FTTH. This means that ONTs may be moved indoors, much in the same way as cable modems are deployed. With the move comes the need for less “environmental hardening” of the ONT, lowering its overall cost. One study that we are aware of indicated a cost savings of greater than 50% by moving the ONT indoors. All that is required, then, on the exterior of the home is a simple point to connect the OSP fiber to the fiber used inside the home/building.
ONT inside Home
Amphenol offers a Fiber Interface Terminal (FIT) designed for outside plant deployments that provides a convenient demarcation point for connecting an OSP fiber drop cable to the customer premises cable in residential applications.
This craft-friendly, easy to install fiber demarcation enclosure can accommodate up to 90 feet of slack storage for the OSP flat drop cable. Slack storage for the customer premises cable is segregated from the drop cable to provide installation efficiency as well as protection for the customer cable. Robust cable tie-down features are incorporated for both the input and output cable ports. Integrated anchor points at both cable ports allow the user to secure conduit resulting in greater flexibility for a variety of deployment scenarios.
This durable enclosure is designed for outside plant environments and incorporates innovative design features that help prevent the ingress of water and dust.
